St. George's University School of Veterinary Medicine 2015
Hello, My name is Dr. Ekta Rattan and the furball in the picture with me is my cat Rosie. I am extremely excited to be a part of the Avonlea and Hollybank veterinary family. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t love animals and having a family full of animals was what initially drew me to the veterinary profession. My grandfather was the first person to encourage this love for animals and for my seventh birthday, he gave me “Animal Watching: A New Guide to the Animal World” by Desmond Morris which was filled with colourful pictures and details of many different types of animals. As an inquisitive seven-year-old, I knew from that moment that I wanted to work with, heal and help animals. This seven-year-old’s passion to heal animals pushed me to pursue my undergraduate degree in Animal Biology at the University of Guelph and then graduate as a veterinarian from St. George’s University after completing my clinical year at Cornell University.
What I love the most about being a veterinarian is that you never stop learning; from your peers, from the animals and from my patient’s owners. Animals are an integral part of our families and provide us with so much unconditional love and ask us for so very little in return. I believe that it is both my job and passion to provide my patients with the most up to date medicine and surgery, which is why I chose to pursue additional education in two internships: a small animal rotating internship and a specialty internship in oncology (cancer/palliative care). I specifically have a special interest in internal medicine, oncology, geriatrics, and ultrasound. There is nothing that provides me more joy than educating owners and seeing my patients go home healthy and happy at the end of the day. I truly believe in developing relationships based upon empathy and animal welfare with my patients and their owners.
In my free time, I enjoy cooking, food tastings, staying active, snuggling with my rambunctious cat Rosie and going wine tasting with my husband. My husband and I are avid travelers and are always looking for new places and countries to explore, so please feel free to share your travel stories with me!
I have never worked a day in my life because I love what I do. I look forward to getting to know you and your fur-babies!
